Why I Started This
I created the Waythrough Project because I watched people struggle with the affordable housing system—not because they weren't trying hard enough, but because the system itself is broken and confusing. During my years working with HUD-VASH, I saw veterans who had served their country find themselves lost in a maze of paperwork, acronyms, and deadlines. I saw families spend hours on the phone being transferred between departments. I saw people give up before they even started because they didn't know where to look or who to ask.
The tragedy isn't that these programs don't exist. It's that the people who need them most often can't find them or understand how to access them. The resources are there, but they're scattered, buried in bureaucratic websites, and explained in language that doesn't speak to real people's lives.
What Waythrough Will Cover
This project is built to be a real guide for people navigating the affordable housing landscape. Here's what you'll find here:
Section 8 and Housing Choice Vouchers: Step-by-step explanations of how to apply, what to expect during the waitlist, how to use your voucher, and what to do if you face rejection or other challenges.
HUD-VASH for Veterans: A veteran's guide to this program that bridges VA benefits with housing assistance. I'll share what the program actually offers, how it works, what paperwork you need, and insights I've gained from working with veterans through this process.
Tenant Rights: Know what your landlord can and can't do. Understand your protections under fair housing law and Section 8 regulations. Learn how to document issues and advocate for yourself.
Programs for Specific Communities: Resources tailored for seniors, people with disabilities, and survivors of domestic violence—because one-size-fits-all housing help doesn't actually fit everyone.
How This Site Works
Waythrough is designed to be practical and navigable. You'll find:
Resources pages that break down the actual programs with links to applications, waiting lists, and official information. No fluff. Just what you need to get started.
Blog posts that dig deeper—exploring common questions, mistakes people make, what worked for real people, and how to handle specific situations you might encounter.
Video content on social media that makes this information even more accessible. Some people learn better by watching. We get that.
Everything here is informed by real experience, not just policy documents. When I write about HUD-VASH, I'm drawing on years of working with veterans through the program. When I explain Section 8, I'm thinking about the people I've talked to who were confused by it.
My Personal Why
When I was working with the HUD-VASH program, I noticed something that stuck with me: there was often a devastating gap between people who desperately needed help and people who could actually provide it. A veteran would come in without knowing that the program existed. A family would be cycling through shelters without understanding that they might qualify for a voucher. A person with a disability would struggle with accessibility requirements because nobody explained what questions to ask or how to advocate for themselves.
The system works for people who already know how to work the system. Waythrough exists to change that.
I believed then—and I believe now—that information and clarity are the first step toward justice. You can't advocate for yourself if you don't know what you're entitled to. You can't access programs if you don't know they exist. You can't make good decisions if you don't understand your options.
You're Not Alone in This
If you're navigating affordable housing right now, you're doing something hard. You're dealing with application processes, documentation requirements, and a system that can feel deliberately complicated. You're managing stress about housing security while also trying to build your life.
This project is for you. I want you to find here what I wish had been available to the people I worked with—clear, honest, practical guidance from someone who understands the system and cares about getting you to the other side of it.
Waythrough isn't a replacement for official guidance or legal advice, and it isn't a shortcut around the real work of applying for these programs. But it's a map. It's a companion. It's someone who's been through this landscape before saying, "Here's where you need to go. Here's what to watch out for. Here's what success looks like."
